Rural fishermen, Nigeria
Africa has always featured strongly in Mott MacDonald’s
international portfolio. We adopt a multi-sector one-stop approach
covering health, education, power, water and environment using our
own specialist consultants and various partnerships.
Diverse experience of the region has been acquired through
successive projects in individual SADC countries (Angola, Botswana,
the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique,
South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe), and
through large regional projects for various aid agencies.
Hydrological assessment
We have carried out regional projects to help countries improve
their hydrometric databases for project planning and evaluation of
water resource development programmes funded by World Bank/UNDP.
And, more recently, we have reviewed groundwater development issues
in the SADC countries funded by SIDA.
Environmental studies
Environmental studies are of growing importance in the
SADC region. Mott MacDonald
conducted an environmental impact study for the Metsemotlhaba
Transfer Scheme in Botswana involving a number of studies
concerning settlement, socio-economic factors, land evaluation and
forestry. And, in South Africa, we gave environmental advice about
development proposals for the
Noordhoek Wetlands near Cape
Town.
Agriculture
We have carried out many projects with an agricultural base –
reflecting its high importance in the development of countries.
Studies have included investigations of agriculture, livestock,
wildlife utilisation, forestry and fisheries in floodplains and
surrounding areas, and rehabilitation and expansion of existing
agricultural land, including management options to increase local
farmer involvement and diversification into fish farming, chicken
and dairy production.
Integrated work
The majority of Mott MacDonald’s projects in Africa bring together
a wide range of abilities from across the Mott MacDonald group. The
recent development by Mott MacDonald of Kilimanjaro Airport
involved the provision of environmental and water resource
expertise as well as water supply, water treatment and education to
produce an integrated master plan.
Our multidisciplinary teams have provided skills in the following
areas: dams and tunnels; road system design; economic and financial
studies; environmental studies including rural sociology; public
health; ecology; agriculture; fisheries; tourism; national and
international legal drafting; and project management.
