Water resources KazakhstanWater resources Kazakhstan, Aral Sea Project

Mott MacDonald has been active in Central Asia since 1994 when we began helping to develop water resource management in the region. Early projects included the Kazakhstan Irrigation and Drainage Improvement Project which set the scene for our future involvement in developing innovative solutions for irrigation development including participatory environmental management and capacity building.

Subsequently we have been involved in a wide range of projects covering agriculture, rural development, education, health, water resources development and environment for international development agencies and the public and private sectors.

Our significant corporate and individual experience in the region includes a sound understanding of project procedures, legislation and logistics. Networks of project and country offices support our activities in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Example projects include:

  • A development plan for the West Tien Shan region to protect the biodiversity. The project included developing supporting environmental legislation, providing training in sustainable economic development and improving cross-border co-operation. Kyrgyzstan.
  • A regional water management project for the rational use of water resources in the Aral Sea Basin. The project involved developing political agreement between the five participating countries (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan) on an acceptable approach to managing the region’s water resources, whilst taking into account agricultural, environmental, industrial and potable demands.
  • Drainage, irrigation and wetlands improvement project, a World Bank financed project in the Aral Sea area of Uzbekistan.
