Recent flooding events across Europe caused £
billions of damage to property, possessions and businesses, and
risked lives as well as people’s livelihoods. This has lead to
local and national governments placing increasing importance on
early warning systems and flood forecasting.Mott MacDonald
is a leading consultancy in flood forecasting and warning, and we
have a strong track-record of Flood Risk Mapping, Strategic Flood
Risk Assessments and Flood Risk Management. Our flood forecasting
models are used by environmental regulators such as the Environment
Agency (England and Wales), and local governments to help guide
development decisions and extend the accuracy and lead time of
warnings.
Mott MacDonald has contributed to many flood forecasting and
warning projects throughout Europe, including in the UK, where we
have developed integrated flood forecasting models in support of
the Environment Agency’s National Flood Forecasting System
(NFFS).
Each forecasting study is different. We have access to a large pool
of experts in modelling, hydrology, engineering and GIS, as well as
information technology and telemetry systems. This allows us to
provide a tailored and professional approach, meeting the needs of
all our clients. Key deliverables of SFRAs are flood risk maps and
flood zone maps. Mott MacDonald is highly skilled at producing such
maps, which show a calculated extent of flooding, and enable
planners to make quick decisions. Our flood inundation and hazard
maps combine digital terrain modelling and hydrodynamic modelling
(water levels) in a GIS, which show areas of flooding, depth and
maximum flow velocity. These can be produced for real time
scenarios as animations of dam break or other flood event.
