Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Directive
This European Union directive requires that an environmental
assessment is carried out by Local Authorities during the
preparation of planning and land use strategies. Other plans must
be considered and any significant environmental effects must be
addressed early. Some of the requirements include consulting with
the public and environmental authorities, considering environmental
implications in the decision making process and monitoring the
actual environmental effects of any plan during implementation.
The implementation of the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004
has introduced a more general duty to integrate SEA into the wider
sustainability assessment (SA) process for a range of plans. We
offer the environmental services required to help Local Authorities
and other organisations become fully familiar with this process
including:
- Strategic environmental assessment
- Sustainability appraisal
- Environmental impact assessment
- Natural resource management
In order to help organisations increase their capacity for SA/SEA,
Mott MacDonald offers a half-day introductory training workshop.
This aims to share experiences in practice and assist in preparing
plans and policies that deliver compliance and real sustainability.
Mott MacDonald has already provided training workshops for more
than 60 Local Authorities, with very positive feedback.
