Habitat and species conservation

Pagham Harbour, UK, a Ramsar Site and SSSIPagham Harbour, UK, a Ramsar Site and Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI)

Mott MacDonald has a comprehensive portfolio of successful marine and coastal projects which directly or indirectly meet the needs of compliance with the implementation of national and international conservation legislation on habitats and species.

European legislation in particular, for example the Habitats Directive, has a strong bearing on how we approach our work, and it’s our goal to use our wide experience to provide our clients with the best possible technical expertise. To achieve this, we work closely with national regulators, local authorities and the conservation community to ensure that we identify and address all issues of concern while providing our clients with an efficient and complete service. In particular, our staff has extensive experience in following the national and international legislation conservation framework, including the:
  • Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD);
  • UN Convention on the Law of the Sea;
  • IUCN Red List of Threatened Species;
  • Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES);
  • Ramsar Convention;
  • European Directives (EU Water Framework, Habitats and Birds Directive);
  • UK Countryside Rights of Way Act; and,
  • UK Biodiversity Action Plans.
We have a comprehensive portfolio of successful projects which directly or indirectly meet the needs of compliance with implementation of the Water Framework Directive in Britain and across Europe. In addition, we are actively involved in the development of the forthcoming EU Marine Strategy Directive, which will focus directly on coastal and marine issues.
