Meeting with water users' groups, Afghanistan
Mott MacDonald has undertaken a wide range of environmental
tasks with objectives that include helping develop the ability of
the client (or beneficiary) organisation to undertake similar work
in the future. We recognise that this is often a particularly
important part of the assignment, and take a careful approach in
order to maximise the value of capacity-building elements.
Our specialist staff have extensive experience of working as part
of integrated teams with clients and national consultants, and
recognise the importance of using a sensitive approach to the work
that maximises the benefits of ‘on-the-job’ passing on of
specialist expertise. We are also familiar with development of
specific training programmes to improve corporate and individual
skills – from training needs assessments through to delivery of
specific training activities.
In order to support this work we have access to a wide range of
technical skills in-house. These skills include:
Water quality sampling exercise, Joint Rivers'
Project, UkraineSpecialist consultants to provide analysis
of institutional functions and needs, and to critically review
legislative frameworks in which the institutions function
- Human resource development and training specialists to analyse
training needs for improved effectiveness and to deliver it
- Management information specialists to provide technical,
computer-based solutions or technologies to improve the development
of management information, and its effective dissemination
- Financial and accounting specialists to provide techniques for
financial control and planning.
Projects we have undertaken with a strong capacity-building
element include the:
- Joint River Management project in seven Newly Independent
States, improving river management skills and specifically
including a range of training activities to improve the performance
of monitoring laboratories
- WRDMAP project to improve water management techniques across
China, including a wide range of training courses, development of
training materials, and specific activities targeted at 'training
by doing'
- Irrigation Improvement Project in Egypt, where
capacity-building to improve irrigation water management took place
within a wide range of government and farmer organisations
- Technical Assistance for water management in Afghanistan on an
EC-funded project to help build the capacity of the Ministry of
Irrigation and farmers groups to improve agricultural water
management in a sustainable way.
